Why the formulas disagree

Every one of these equations is a line fitted through a scatter plot of real measured maximum heart rates against age. The lines differ because the underlying populations differed: different age ranges, different fitness levels, different proportions of men and women, different testing protocols.

  • Fox (220 − age) dates from the 1970s and was never intended as a precise clinical tool. It overestimates for younger adults and underestimates for older ones, and the error grows at both extremes.
  • Tanaka (208 − 0.7 × age) came from a meta-analysis of hundreds of studies and is generally the best default for adults.
  • Gulati (206 − 0.88 × age) was derived from a large cohort of women and typically fits women better than male-dominated equations.
  • Nes (211 − 0.64 × age) came from a large study of active adults and tends to read slightly higher.

The more important point is the one the table understates: none of them is precise for an individual. The standard deviation around these lines is roughly 10 to 12 bpm, meaning a substantial share of healthy people sit more than 20 bpm away from their predicted value.

When the estimate matters, and when it does not

If you are using heart rate zones to structure training, an error of 15 bpm in your assumed maximum shifts every zone boundary by roughly 9 to 15 bpm. That is enough to turn an intended easy session into a moderate one, which is exactly the failure mode that makes training weeks unproductive.

Two practical mitigations. First, cross-check zone 2 with the talk test, which is free and reasonably reliable. Second, if your watch has recorded a higher heart rate during a hard race or session than any formula predicts, believe the watch: an observed maximum beats a predicted one. Common questions

Which max heart rate formula is most accurate?

For general adult use, the Tanaka equation (208 minus 0.7 times age) is usually the best default and outperforms the traditional 220 minus age, particularly for people over 40. For women, the Gulati equation (206 minus 0.88 times age) often fits better. All formulas carry substantial individual error, so a measured maximum is always preferable when you have one.

Is 220 minus age wrong?

It is not wrong so much as imprecise and systematically biased. It tends to overestimate maximum heart rate in younger adults and underestimate it in older adults. It remains widely used because it is easy to remember, but better-validated alternatives exist and cost nothing extra to use.

Does a higher max heart rate mean I am fitter?

No. Maximum heart rate is largely determined by age and genetics and is not a fitness measure. Training does not meaningfully raise it, and in fact very well-trained endurance athletes sometimes show slightly lower maximums. Resting heart rate and VO2 max are far better indicators of aerobic fitness.

Is it safe to test my maximum heart rate?

A maximal effort test is physically demanding and is not appropriate for everyone, particularly anyone with known or suspected cardiovascular disease, uncontrolled blood pressure, or relevant symptoms. Speak to a doctor before attempting one. In most cases the highest heart rate your watch has already recorded during hard training is a sufficient practical estimate.
